PENANG: Mobif Bhd is releasing a new wireless card in the fourth quarter to capitalise on the increasing popularity of Voiceover-Internet protocol (VoIP) and Internet surveillance system.
Chief executive officer Leong Kong Hoy said the card, to be marketed as (Burst, was being developed with a Japanese company specialising in manufacturing computer peripherals.
"Mobif has invested RM5mil in the research and development of the card, which will have VoIP and Internet surveillance-enabled features.
"Users of IBurst will be able to access Mobif VoIP channels and Mobif Internet surveillance system," lie said after the company AGM yesterday.
Mobif would initially introduce some 10.000 (Burst cards for the domestic market, Leong said.
He added that the introduction of the card was timely as the Government aimed to position the country as a competitive know edge-based economy by 2010.
"As the Government improves its information and communications technology (ICT), there will be a greater need for ICT-related industries and services in the private sector to expand," he said.
Leong said that as at Dec 31. 2006, Mobif had utilised about 59%, or RM6.7mil, of the RM 11.4mil proceeds raised from its private placement.
The proceeds raised are torte fully used within 24 months of the completion of the private placement on March 21, 2006.
